New Initiative Connects UPMC Patients with Research Opportunities
UPMC has launched a new initiative, the UPMC EHR Research Recruitment Service (Opt-Out), designed to make it easier for patients to learn about and participate in research studies. Similar models are being adopted by learning health systems nationwide to strengthen the connection between research and patient care. Patients receiving care at UPMC are now automatically included in this service, which allows research teams to identify individuals who may be eligible for clinical studies. Participation is entirely voluntary, and patients can decline being contacted at any time.
If a patient is identified as a potential match for a study, they will receive information about the opportunity and can decide whether or not to take part. The service is fully compliant with privacy regulations and adheres to strict security standards. Patient information is only accessed in accordance with these established guidelines.
If you have questions about how this process works or how it may impact your practice, please contact the UPMC EHR Research Recruitment Service at 412-624-1030.
“Many patients are open to participating in research but may not know what opportunities are available,” said Dr. Eric Dueweke, Associate Vice Chair for Inpatient Medicine and Care Standardization, Department of Medicine. “This system provides a structured, patient-centered way to share information about studies—while making it clear that participation is always the patient's choice.”
“By adopting this approach, we're joining other leading health systems in bringing research opportunities closer to patients,” said Dr. Steven Reis, Director, Clinical and Translational Science Institute (CTSI). “This is an important step toward making research more accessible and ensuring patients who may benefit from participating are aware of their options.”
